Keen to promote music to boost the local economy, Okinawa City hosts various music events such as the Peaceful Rock Festival which is famous throughout Japan. Among the citizens themselves there is a marked interest in music activities with live music venues, dance schools and so on, in abundance. It was the rock musicians who played in postwar Koza as well as the folk singers active in the traditional folk bars that established the city’s musical character. Legendary bands Murasaki and Condition Green, as well as renowned folk singers Seijin Noborikawa and Rinsho Kadekaru, rose to fame during the postwar period.
