18th Ryukyu Horse Racing (Umaharashii)
Ryukyu Horse Racing "Umaharashii" is the traditional culture of the Ryukyu Arc region that had been practiced for about 300 years since the Ryukyu Kingdom era. It had temporarily ceased due to the war, but Okinawa Zoo & Museum in cooperation with local organizations, revived it in 2013 for the first time in about 70 years.
However, due to COVID-19, the event was suspended from 2020, but will be held in 2023, commemorating the 10th year since its revival.
In the competition, horses from all over the prefecture, including remote islands, will gather to compete in the beauty of running as one.
In addition, there will be a variety of workshops and exhibitions to learn about Okinawa's history and culture, and of course, food vendors, and plenty of fun and entertainment for everyone.
