Ryukyu Wildlife Workshop “The Okinawa Rail and the Zoo”

The Okinawa rail is an extremely rare bird found only in the northern Yambaru region of Okinawa Island.
In May, these birds—busy caring for their young—are often seen on roads, which is why the month is designated as “STOP! Roadkill Awareness Month” to help prevent traffic accidents.
This workshop will share insights into the ecology of the Okinawa Rail and how zoos are helping to protect them.
Participants will also create their own original sacoche (small shoulder bag) while imagining the bird’s natural habitat.
To wrap up, a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Okinawa Rail’s zoo habitat—normally closed to the public—will be offered.
This program is packed with the fascinating charm of the Okinawa Rail!
