A competition showcasing the beauty of harmony between horse and rider —
Ryukyu Horse Racing Umaharashīi

Unlike modern horse racing, winners are decided based on riding posture and elegance rather than speed.
“Ryukyu Horse Racing Nmahara-shī,” a traditional culture of the Ryukyu Arc region that dates back about 300 years to the Ryukyu Kingdom era, was once discontinued due to the war. In collaboration with local organizations, Okinawa Zoo & Museum revived the event in 2013 for the first time in approximately 70 years.
At the competition, horses gather from across Okinawa Prefecture, including remote islands, to compete in the beauty of their unified movement with their riders.

In addition, there will be a variety of workshops and exhibits that introduce Okinawan history and culture, as well as food stalls—making this a full-day event packed with enjoyment.
