Koza Craft Shop Fundu

Koza is not just famous for its music and the nearby Kadena airbase. There are many notable artisans producing handicrafts such as bingata (a traditionally dyed Okinawan textile), takezaiku (bamboo work), yachimun (traditional Okinawan pottery) and woodwork in Okinawa City. Chibana-hanaori -- a traditionally woven textile produced only in Okinawa City -- is characterized by its repeating patterns and natural, plant-based dyes. In 2012 Chibana-hanaori was designated a traditional craft by the Japanese government, greatly increasing demand for fabric created by this technique. However, here you can purchase items made from this textile for everyday use, such as wallets and card cases. You will also find Tina Audio products, featuring high quality and custom-made audio equipment, and Glass Studio Hiro, which produces Ryukyu glassware with its characteristic bubbles. The name of the shop, Fundou, means “iron clamp (used to join pieces of wood)” in the Okinawan dialect. Fundu strives to be a place that can join people, handicrafts and the city together.
