Climate and clothes for traveling to Okinawa
Okinawa is the only region in Japan with a subtropical climate.
The mild and comfortable temperatures year-round are one of Okinawa's main attractions, but there are appropriate clothing for each season.
Climate and Clothing for Okinawa Travel
The average temperature in Okinawa during spring (March to April) ranges from 19°C to 22°C, which is relatively warm compared to other regions in Japan, so long sleeves are comfortable.
Okinawa enters rainy season from May to June, making short sleeves the ideal choice for clothing.
The rainy season ends in mid-June, marking the arrival of summer in Okinawa! (Typhoon season also begins around June and lasts until November.)
From July to October, we recommend bringing a lightweight cardigan and wearing sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Even in October, the weather is still warm enough for short sleeves and enjoying water sports.
In November, the daytime heat eases a bit and the weather becomes more comfortable, but even on cloudy days the UV rays can be strong, so don't forget sun protection.
As for winter in Okinawa, you will need a coat from December to February.
Especially in January and February when the Cherry Blossom Festival is held, the average temperature is around 17°C, and the north winds from the sea can make it feel colder. On days when it suddenly starts to rain lightly, the temperature can drop to 14°C, so it's a good idea to wear a sweater under your coat.
Please use this a sa guide when deciding what clothes to pack before your trip to Okinawa.
