The castle was the residence of the 15th-century hero of Katsuren, Amawari, who was an active figure during the Ryukyu Kingdom. In 2000, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu."
The Last Hero, Ahmawari
vs. The Raging General, Oni Ufugushiku
In the 15th century, during the Warring States Period of Ryukyu, Amawari, who rose from the ranks of a farmer to become the lord of Katsuren Castle, was a hero of Katsuren who led it to prosperity comparable to that of Shuri through overseas trade and determined to take over the Kingdom, challenged King Sho Taikyu to battle. He was prevented by the great warrior Kenyu Ufugushiku, who was called "Oni Ufugushiku". As an attendant to the princess who married into the Katsuren Castle, he discovered the ambitions of Amawari, and after returning to Shuri, he fought a decisive battle at Katsuren Castle as a general of the royal army under the order of King Sho Taikyu, finally defeating Amawari after a fierce battle, and Shuri's dominance in Ryukyu was secured. In Uruma City, there is Katsuren Castle, the residence of the Amawari, and in Okinawa City, there is Goeku Castle, where King Sho Taikyu lived, and Chibana Castle, associated with Oni Ufugushiku, allowing visitors to get a sense of the times in which they lived. Please visit the castle ruin sites and experience the story of the historical romance of the Ryukyu Islands.
